Georgia Forestry Association
Nestled along the picturesque coastline of Georgia, Jekyll Island stands as a hidden gem. It captivates visitors with its untouched natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and rich historical significance. Once an exclusive winter retreat for the country’s wealthiest families, Jekyll Island has transformed into a beloved destination. It offers a unique blend of relaxation, exploration, and education. I am visiting there for the annual Georgia Forestry Association Conference and look forward to the GFA at Jekyll Island every year as it is the largest forestry meeting in the United States.
I usually go early to have an opportunity to explore the island and fish. Jekyll Island boasts an unspoiled landscape, and nearly two-thirds of its land is dedicated to protected wildlife habitats and preserved natural areas. The island has a diverse wildlife, which includes migratory birds, sea turtles, and a variety of marine life. There is an extensive network of hiking and biking trails that wind their way through the island’s lush forests, offering a chance to encounter deer, raccoons, and other native creatures in their natural habitat. One year, I walked less than ten feet from a buck standing in the road, unbothered by my presence.
Jekyll Island
Beyond its natural splendor, Jekyll Island boasts a captivating historical past. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the island served as an exclusive winter retreat for prominent American families, including the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, and Astors. The Jekyll Island Club, an exclusive lavish club, became the playground for the country’s wealthiest elite. A short walk provides a step back in time as visitors can tour the Jekyll Island Historic District. Restored cottages, once the vacation homes of the wealthy, offer a glimpse into the island’s glamorous past. The Jekyll Island Clubhouse, a stunning example of Victorian architecture, has been converted into a beautiful hotel where guests can stay and experience the timeless elegance of a past era. Last year when I pulled up to the hotel, croquet players in white outfits salted the expansive front lawn.
Visit Jekyll Island
Jekyll Island isn’t just a vacation destination; it also serves as an educational hub for environmental awareness and conservation. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a state-of-the-art rehabilitation and research facility. It works tirelessly to rehabilitate injured sea turtles and educate the public about the importance of marine conservation. Additionally, the Tidelands Nature Center provides hands-on educational programs for visitors of all ages. The Center encourages an understanding of coastal ecosystems and the importance of preserving them for future generations.
While I spend most of my time inside at the conference, Jekyll Island is a picturesque place to visit. It is a timeless island escape with untouched natural beauty, historical charm, and educational endeavors. As one of the crown jewels of Georgia’s coastline, it stands as a testament to the importance of preserving our natural heritage while offering an unforgettable experience for all who venture to its shore. The GFA at Jekyll Island was great experience in a beautiful place.
